a tooth with a cavity in a popup window Dental amalgam is made of a mixture of metals and is usually used to repair cavities in the back of the mouth. It is very durable and has been used by dentists for many years.
a tooth being drilled During the first step, your tooth is prepared by removing the decayed portion, leaving a small area that will be filled with the amalgam.
the cavity being filled with amalgam Your dentist then applies the amalgam to the prepared area, presses it into place, and shapes it to match the contours of your tooth.
